Membership Nominations and Examinations

Candidates who are interested in becoming Members of our Association are asked to review the information on this page and download and complete the Membership Application form using this link:

The qualifications for the various classes of Membership are identified in Article III of the Association’s By-Laws. Article III of our By-Laws describes the available membership categories and their eligibility requirements. Download By-Laws here.

The Association strives to arrange for candidates to sit exams at a place convenient to them. Deadlines for the submission of nominations for each membership class, and their respective examination dates, are as follows:

Full Member:

  • All nominations for Full membership must be received no later than May 31st each year.
  • The examination of eligible candidates for Full membership typically takes place at the end of the first full week in September - in 2026, on September 8th/9th.
  • The Association recommends that candidates for Full Membership review our Examination Guide.

Marine Hull Claims Professional Member:

  • All nominations for Marine Hull Claims Professional membership must be received no later than May 31st each year.
  • The examination of eligible candidates for Marine Hull Claims Professional membership typically takes place at the end of the first full week in September - in 2026, on September 9th.

Subject Specialist Member - American Institute Hull Clauses (1977)

  • In 2023 the Association created a new category of Specialist Membership, to be granted to candidates demonstrating 'competence in such specialized practice areas as the Association may designate from time to time'. The first such specialized area is The American Institute Hull Clauses, and the first examination in this specialized subject was offered in September, 2025. Going forward, it will take place on a date to be announced each year, in early September - in 2026, on September 9th. All nominations must be received by May 31st.

Associate Members:

  • All nominations for Associate membership must be received no later than September 14th each year. Such memberships are not subject to examination.
